Personal Statement The Club - 1917 Words

A couple of weeks ago, I joined a local run club that a couple friends of mine encouraged me to join. Each week, the club meets and accomplished the following activities: meet greet, announcement of local races in the community, run 3-5 miles, high fives all around. The runs themselves are not meant to be overly competitive, it’s just fun to get out and run around with some familiar faces. The first day I showed up, I knew I was going to have a hard time since I hadn’t run in a month or two; I was coming off of a mild injury that kept me from exercising. When we started running, I felt fine and kept up with the group just fine. Around halfway through the run though, I wanted to stop. One leg was giving out on me and the other was†¦show more content†¦No, not at all! If I had my way, I would have stopped halfway through. I kept going because I was doing it with friends and I didn’t want to be the one who gave up. This, my friends, is social accountability at it’s finest and it clearly works for me when it comes to running long-stance. But I can’t help but wonder, can we, as young professionals, apply this same methodology to our lives? More specifically, can we use the idea of social accountability to help grow in our careers? As human beings, we’re all motivated differently and what works for me might not work for you. So instead of trying to convince you to think exactly how I think, I’m going to share some of my story with you - failures and successes alike - of how being a part of different, social communities has been so impactful for my education and some of my early career successes. High School is Hard I went to high school with a lot of really impressive people. In short, most of the kids were from the good side of the train tracks and to be completely honest, it made me a little self conscious knowing others had more than me - better looks, better cars, basically better everything. At my previous school, I had good grades, was a strong multi-sport athlete, and had a ton of friends. When my parents transferred me and my brother to our new school, I struggled in the classroom, was an average athlete, and had no friends. I didn t excel at anything anymore and all of

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a brilliant American novelist and short story writer whose stories greatly contributed to the growth of American literature in the nineteenth century. Born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts, Hawthorne was a descendent of both William and John Hathorne, both Puritan leaders in Salem in the seventeenth century. John Hathorne, Nathaniel’s great-great-grandfather, was one of the three judges during the Salem Witch Trials; for this reason, Nathaniel added a â€Å"w† to his surname to avoid association with him. Hawthorne had many great works, among them are: The Scarlet Letter, Twice-Told Tales, and â€Å"Young Goodman Brown.† Hawthorne was influenced by his Puritan ancestry when he wrote some of his works including â€Å"Young†¦show more content†¦The man offers her his staff, which bears resemblance to a serpent, and when he drops it down, it comes alive and flies Goody Cloyse away. This event gives Goodman Brown increasing d oubts about the people of Salem and exactly how pure they really are. Goodman Brown also encounters Deacon Gookin and the minister. Goodman Brown discovers that these two pious men are also attending the secret meeting and they mention â€Å"there is a goodly woman to be taken into communion,† which gives Brown even more doubt about his fellow villagers. Brown’s doubt is beginning to consume him. â€Å"With heaven above and Faith below, I will yet stand firm against the devil!† Brown forcefully declares. After he announces that he will stand firm against the devil, he then finds his wife’s pink ribbons in the trees. He begins to assume the worst and he is sent into a frenzied shock as he cries out, â€Å"My Faith is gone!† Young Goodman Brown is sent into a hysterical shock after finding his wife’s pink ribbons in the forest. Goodman Brown becomes filled with emotion and he is infuriated, he then starts to run through the forest. Characters such as Wolverine from the X-men, Batman from The Dark Knight, and Shrek from Shrek the movie are great examples of people who seemly are evil, but really do good for others around them. These characters are very similar to Jean Valjean in Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. People, in general, have both good and evil in them. But throughout the book, Jean Valjean becomes a much kinder, nice person. At one point, he saves a young girl, named Cosette, from the abuse she was enduring from the Thenardiess. All he says is, â€Å"suppose you were relieved of her? † (174) and she was his. He did a lot for this young girl. One major thing he did was risk his life to save the man that she was in love with. After a big fight, Marius becomes greatly wounded, and Jean tries to save him. Marius was helped from â€Å"the hand which had seized him from behind at the moment he was falling†¦ was the hand of Jean Valjean† (505). Jean tried to help everyone, even though he did badly when he was younger. In Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Hugo shows that characters use their conscience to make decisions. Everyone has choices to make on a daily basis and they can choose to do good or bad. In the book, the characters had the attempt to make the good choice in their decisions. When Jean Valjean stole from the bishop and got caught, he busted himself out even when the bishop covered for him. When the gendarme brought him back to the bishop, Jean â€Å"raised his head with stupefied air† (33) because he knew he had to face the kind people after he had stolen. After this bad choice, he made the choice to do better, which theoretically his conscience is telling him to do good things. Javert also made the better choice by, at the end, letting Jean Valjean free. Throughout the whole book, it’s been a wild goose chase for Javert to catch Jean and finally he does. While Javert, he went on a walk. There he realizes that â€Å"there was matter for self-examination† (529) and he revaluates his situation. During his â€Å"self-examination† he realizes that Jean was good and that now Jean has saved him from death, he couldn’t send him to jail. That self-examination is like having a conversation with your conscience and thinking of if you should do good or bad. And in the end, he did good and let Jean go. In Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Hugo shows that anyone can make a bad situation, good. If you’re stuck in a bad condition, you need to think fast and get yourself out of that bad situation. Most people would do that by doing well. When Fantine gave up her daughter because she knew she couldn’t take care of her alone, she was trying to make a bad situation, better for someone else. She even cut her hair off, so that her daughter had money. Towards the end of her life, she goes a tad crazy. She would say to herself, â€Å"When I am rich, I shall have my cosette with me, â€Å"(64) and she laughed, like she knew what she was saying was totally insane, but she kept telling herself that anyways. When Jean Valjean first took Cosette, he had to hide from Javert and the others with him. He was in a bad situation, but he tried to remember that he had a young girl with him and tried to make it a good situation. When they were running and finally gave up, Jean heard voices. And â€Å"while these voices were singing Jean Valjean was entirely absorbed in them. He no longer saw the night, he saw a blue sky† (200). So even though he was in pain and struggling to go on, he let his religion over take him and he knew he had to go on to have Cosette. No matter how bad a person is, there is always some good in them. Hugo has proved this by conveying that characters that do bad can still be a good person, that they use their conscience to make decisions, and that if they try they can make bad situations, good. The Greenhouse Effect Essay Paper The greenhouse effect occurs when gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and CFCs trap heat in the atmosphere by acting as a pane of glass in a car. The glass lets the sunlight in to make heat, but when the heat tries to get out the gases absorb the heat. Holding this heat in causes heat waves, droughts, and climate changes which could alter our way of living. The main gases that cause the greenhouse effect are water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane, which comes mainly from animal manure. Other gases like nitrogen oxide and chloroflurocarbons, man made gases, get caught in the atmosphere as well. The decay of animals and respiration are two main natural sources of carbon dioxide. In my opinion, we the people of the world should try to slow down the emission of greenhouse gases and/or find ways to balance the gases so the climate doesnt change so rapidly. If it did, we would be forced to adapt to the new climate that we brought upon ourselves. If we had an inter national cooperation to put a damper on the production of chloroflurocarbons and slowed down the use of fossil fuels it would dramatically slow done the process of global warming. Carbon dioxide pollution from the increase of industry and transportation is a major cause of global warming. These two causes are connected with the growth in the world population. As the population grows the necessity for food and other products increase, therefore industry must grow to keep up with the demand. The increase in transportation is directly due to the growing population and the need for jobs and the growing congestion on our highways. Another cause in global warming is deforestation. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air as they grow. The carbon dioxide is released back into the air as they are cut and burned. The forest ability to reduce the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is decreasing due to massive deforestation around the world. These causes seem simple and fixable, but if they ar e not cut down, the Earth and its inhabitants will feel the effects. Over the last hundred years, the global temperatures have been increasing slowly, but steadily. Since 1980, the temperature has risen 0.2 degrees Celsius (0.4 degrees Fahrenheit) each decade. Scientist predict that if we continue putting the same amount of gas into the atmosphere, that by the year 2030 the temperature will be rising as much as 0.5 degrees C (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) or more per decade. Overall, the global temperature could rise anywhere from 5 to 9 degrees over the next fifty years. If the temperatures do rise, as predicted, several things could happen. The increase of temperature could alter the growth of crops in areas near the equator due to insufficient rain and heat. This could really hurt countries that rely in imported food. With the high temperatures the polar ice caps could melt and cause the sea water level to go up 1 to 3 feet. This could take out small islands, coastal cities and some shallow rivers. The Everglades in Florida would be almost, if not totally, wiped right off the map. The Everglades is the home for many animals and plant life. If it did get flooded, they would all have to move northward across very dry land, which they will not be able to endure for very long. When the hot temperatures do spread southward and northward, tropical disease will spread with it. Diseases that were down in Mexico will, maybe, occur in North and South Carolina or eventually Vermont. These new diseases will be hard to deal with causing many more deaths and ill nesses that before. The financial problem with this is that the flooding will cause dams to be built and cities to be reconstructed. The shortage in food will cause the price of the food to go up and with all the diseases, we will need more medical supplies and workers. Scientists proved this by predicting, with computers, what the climate was in the past. Then, by looking back in records, they found that the predictions were close to being right. The Topex (Topographic Experiment) collected information on the changes of the sea level, the temperatures across the globe, and the amount of gases emitted into the atmosphere. Each day, the satellite made 500,000 measurements, each at a different place on the Earth. Measurements were all made between 66 degrees north a nd south latitudes. The Cretaceous period occurred over a hundred million years ago. It was the warmest period we have knowledge of yet. There was so much carbon dioxide in the air that the oceans rose many meters. North America was flooded and split into two pieces. The temperature then was more than 15 degrees greater than the average temperature today. Scientists believe that the tilt of the Earths axis changes to title the opposite way every 10,000 years like a cycle. While going through this cycle, it will change the climate of and area. Right now it is moving so that North America is going to be closer to the sun in the winter. Seasons become more extreme when the opposite happens. This controls the cycle of ice ages. Volcanoes, when they erupt, send clouds of dust into the air blocking out sunlight. This would cool the Earth off more. Oceans are known to absorb carbon dioxide because of the ocean currents and the action of plankton. There is some evidence that there is a naturally rapid climate c hange between each ice age, which confuses the whole global warming and idea. I think every human being should take part in the fight to stop global warming. The government is the key to this and they better do something soon or it will be too late. First, the American government should sponsor a meeting between the nations of this world. They should establish a committee for handling the money, politics, and scientific research in order to help cut back the emission of gases into the atmosphere. Every country will contribute by donating money. If they refuse, they will be boycotted and the participating countries will sell nothing to them. Global warming is a big threat to our nation and the world. If we do not act now, it may be too late. Of course, there is no sure way of telling if there is actually a greenhouse effect, but let us not take any chances. Look at what is happening to this world, and you will see that there is a pollution problem. There are steps being taken at this moment to reduce the gases put into the air, but it still is not enough. We need to cut back more by taking a few easy steps. Plant a tree, or take a bus or carpool to work instead of driving your own car. Those things may not seem like a lot, but if more and more people do it, it will make a difference.
